WhatsApp QR, vCard QR, or an editable contact page?
By The log.my team · Published · Updated
Printed contact details age badly: numbers change, staff move on and social handles get renamed. A QR code can keep the printed square useful, but only if you choose the type that matches what may change. This guide compares a vCard QR, the native WhatsApp Business QR and an editable contact page — what each one opens, what can be edited later and what log.my records.
Three paths from one printed square
A printed QR that carries contact details can behave in one of three very different ways. A vCard QR encodes a small contact file that the phone can save straight to its address book. A WhatsApp QR generated by the WhatsApp Business app opens a chat screen with that business. An editable contact page QR opens a hosted page with one or more action buttons, and the page behind it can change later.
The right choice depends less on the artwork and more on what may change: a personal card that rarely changes, a chat-first business with a stable number, or details — social links, campaigns, phone numbers — that move over time.
What the WhatsApp paths actually open
The WhatsApp Business app can generate its own QR code; scanning it opens a chat with the business, optionally pre-filled with a message the business wrote. That native code is managed inside the app and costs nothing — a sensible choice when the chat itself is the goal and the number never changes.
A phone or WhatsApp QR created in log.my behaves differently: it opens a hosted log.my profile page first, then the visitor taps a Call or Open WhatsApp button. There is no one-scan chat, no pre-filled message and no conversation analytics; a chat that starts on WhatsApp stays there.

What a vCard Direct QR saves
A vCard QR encodes the contact file format phones understand — name, phone number, email, organization and website in the log.my editor. Scanning offers to save the contact without opening any web page, which keeps the journey short and works even where browsing is awkward.
That permanence has a price. A vCard QR in log.my is a Direct QR: it is generated in your browser, is not stored in Studio and does not produce visit reports. Once printed, the details inside it cannot be changed; a new number means a new code and a reprint.

What an editable contact page keeps current
Phone, WhatsApp, email and social QR types in log.my point to an editable profile page. Edit the number, email or social links in Studio and the printed code keeps working; a social page can carry up to eight links. The short link behind the code records visits — a redirect count, not proof of a call, a chat or a saved contact.
Note one limitation: profile pages do not offer a Save Contact button. If the visitor should end up with details in their address book, a vCard QR does that; if the details may change, the editable page wins.
For the underlying choice between codes that hold their final data and codes that open a changeable link, see how editable QR codes differ from static ones.
Choose by what may change
Put the options side by side and match each one to the thing that might change.
| Option | What scanning opens | Can change after printing | Tracked by log.my |
|---|---|---|---|
| vCard Direct QR | A contact file the phone can save. | No. Reprint to update. | No. |
| Native WhatsApp Business QR | A WhatsApp chat with the business. | Managed in the WhatsApp app. | No. |
| Phone or WhatsApp profile page | A log.my page with a Call or Open WhatsApp button. | Yes. Edit the details in Studio. | Yes. Short-link visits. |
| Social profile page | A log.my page with up to eight link buttons. | Yes. Edit the links in Studio. | Yes. Short-link visits. |
Test the journey before you print
Whichever path you choose, test it with real phones before printing. Scan the exported code, watch what actually opens and complete the action yourself: place the test call, open the WhatsApp chat, save the vCard to a test contact and tap each social link. Check the printed proof at its final size and distance.
Keep expectations honest in the wording beside the code. A visit recorded on an editable contact QR is not a saved contact or a started chat, and a WhatsApp button that opens the app tells you nothing about what happened next. Say what the code opens — “Scan to call”, “Scan to save my contact”, “Scan for links” — and let the action match the words.
For the printed code itself, use the design and scan-test checklist before approving the artwork.
Put this guide to work
Open Studio, choose phone, WhatsApp, email or social from QR type, then test the printed result on a real phone.
